We’re always on the lookout for beautiful escapes not too far from Johannesburg—those little gems perfect for a long weekend break or when friends and family visit from overseas. In one such quest, we discovered Walkersons Hotel & Spa in the charming town of Dullstroom. And what a delightful find it turned out to be!
Where is Walkersons Hotel & Spa?
Dullstroom is conveniently located about halfway between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park—making it a great stopover or a destination in its own right. We've often paused here for lunch during our road trips, but last year, during my in-laws’ visit from the UK, we decided to make a weekend of it. Thanks to some wonderful recommendations, we booked a stay at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, and we’ve never looked back.
Just 2.5 hours from Johannesburg, it’s an easy drive—and what awaits is nothing short of magical.
First Impressions: Beauty in Every Direction

As we entered the gates of the 800-hectare Walkersons Estate, the winding road took us through lush, rolling hills of the Mpumalanga highveld. We were visiting in October 2024—peak springtime. The tree-lined roads were bursting with blossoms after the first rains; it was truly a sight to behold.
What immediately stood out was the Scottish manor-style architecture—charming stone buildings with wooden finishes that blend seamlessly with the landscape. It felt like we had stepped into a countryside postcard.
Welcomed by Beauty and Warmth
The hotel entrance is as charming as the drive. Immaculately kept gardens and blooming hydrangeas greeted us as we pulled in.

Check-in took place in the main lodge, which exudes an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. The lodge houses both formal and informal lounges, a variety of dining spaces (including one that’s perfect for families with young children), and a sun-drenched terrace with sweeping views of the estate. Adorned with antique furnishings, tapestries, and tasteful artwork, it invites you to slow down and unwind.
Our Stay at Duck Manor

We stayed at the luxury family cottage, Duck Manor, which comfortably accommodates up to six guests. With two large en-suite bedrooms, a loft with twin beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and a comfy lounge featuring a book nook and day bed, it had everything we could want for a relaxed family retreat.
What truly made the stay special was how warm and inviting the cottage felt. From the log fireplaces and underfloor heating to the electric blankets and heated towel rails, every detail was designed to keep us toasty in the crisp Highveld air—absolute bliss!

A Culinary Delight

There's even a thoughtfully crafted kids’ menu to keep younger guests happy—no matter how picky they may be.

We enjoyed our springtime visit so much that we returned in autumn, this time with friends visiting from Italy. Though it was the same place, it felt completely different. The golden hues of the season brought a new kind of magic.
The kids took part in horse riding, while we enjoyed bike rides and hikes through the golden countryside. We also ventured into Dullstroom town to sample local fare and browse the artisan shops—always a treat!
