After moving to Johannesburg, South Africa in 2019, we have been excited to discover different places in the country. With our son growing up, we are now interested in exploring more of the African continent, beginning with our recent visit to Mozambique.

Mozambique is located in the southeastern part of the African continent, with a long coastline that touches the Indian Ocean and shares boundaries with Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Eswatini.

For many South Africans, Mozambique is seen as a convenient beach escape due to its extensive 1,535-mile coastline along the inviting Indian Ocean. Often, many South Africans would undertake a journey of 10-12 hours to cross the border into Mozambique. However, it is important to note that the border crossing into Mozambique can be challenging, as the shift from well-maintained roads in South Africa to rough, sandy paths at the border can be quite sudden. Tales of encountering requests for money, document issues, and border delays may result in a less-than-ideal beginning to the adventure.

If you are considering driving yourself from South Africa to Mozambique, it's important to be well-prepared. For a helpful guide on crossing the border, take a look at this link for your own "Wizard of Oz" adventure:Mozambique Border Crossing Guide

Hey, and don't be disheartened if you are not those crazy adventurous types. Opting for a 45-minute flight from Johannesburg to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is a convenient choice for those who prefer a hassle-free journey.

Having traveled to stunning beach destinations like Mauritius, St Lucia, Langkawi, and Florida, I consider myself lucky. However, Mozambique managed to surpass our expectations, standing out among the other beach spots we have visited. During our December summer holiday, we were seeking a luxurious experience, and I must say that White Pearl stood out in our research and recommendations. Situated in the quaint village of Ponta Mamoli, approximately 100 km from Maputo airport, a 1.5-hour drive through Maputo followed by rough off-road tracks brought us to this immaculate private beach resort.

Beautifully tucked away on the silvery edge of pristine shores of the warm Indian Ocean and designed to provide an opulent beach escape is the White Pearl Resort. Its rugged outdoor location perfectly compliments the designer elegance making this Ponta Mamoli hotel the perfect place for relaxation and rejuvenation. But don't be disheartened if you want to take your family - as this place is equally magical with kids.

What captures your heart is not just the location and luxurious design, but also the exceptional service and ever-friendly demeanor of each staff member who goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is unforgettable. Each room comes with a dedicated butler equipped with a personal mobile phone, ready to assist you at any time of the day. Our butler, Nelson, was truly remarkable – consistently courteous and anticipating our needs before we even voiced them. Every request, no matter how small, was met with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.

The rooms were simply enchanting; spacious villas boasting a king-size extra-length bed, a cozy lounge, a luxurious bath, an outdoor shower, a private plunge pool, and sunbeds on a deck with breathtaking ocean views.

In total, there are 21 villas. The rest of the resort is equally impressive, featuring separate lounges, sunbeds, and spots to enjoy the pool and ocean panoramas. Moreover, there are two restaurants and a delightful bar with a fire pit for evening entertainment.

In addition, we had a great time participating in different activities such as an ocean safari, having breakfast on the beach, and taking a fat bike ride along the stunning and unspoiled coastline. The staff kindly made a wooden add-on seat for our son so he could join us on the fat bikes. Moreover, they even played netball in the pool.

It is these small gestures that count and enhance the memories of your vacation.

It was an amazing experience on the ocean safari. A group of 10 of us embarked early one morning on a dingy trip along the coast to find a pod of dolphins to snorkel with. After about an hour, we came across a playful pod and spent a long time snorkeling with them in the open water. The most memorable moment for me was when our guide carried our 6-year-old son on his back in the middle of the ocean so he could enjoy swimming with the dolphins.

Exploring the breathtaking natural surroundings can be done through various activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and scuba diving. This location is perfect for scuba diving enthusiasts, and the resort offers a comprehensive dive school specifically designed for beginners.

Additionally, we were thrilled to discover that White Pearl Resorts, Ponta Mamoli is situated at one of the most abundant turtle nesting sites in southern Mozambique. From November to February yearly, Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles come to this coastline to lay their eggs. We were fortunate enough to witness the loggerhead turtle one evening as it journeyed to lay its eggs.

DID YOU KNOW?

It is common for marine turtles to return to the same beach to nest. The nesting sites are typically distant from their feeding grounds, requiring females to traverse hundreds of kilometers of ocean without visual cues.

We had a great time playing beach volleyball and taking scenic walks in the coastal forest.

Our experience in White Pearl, Mozambique was delightful, and we are certain that we will visit again soon.
